A tower at 324 meters in the heart of the Amazon
May 26th, 2009 by andrea

Who would want a structure as tall as the Eiffel Tower in the middle of the Amazon Rainforest? Simple: to monitor the effects of climate change on the Amazon biome. The project was announced by the Brazilian government and German in San Paulo, and will cost 8.4 million euros for the first 5 years, including construction and maintenance. It will be managed by the Amazon (INPA) in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute (German research institute non-profit) and provides 4 additional smaller towers. There will also be funded studies and research that will focus on sustainable development.

In fact already in the other towers have been constructed within the forest to measure the flow of gases, particularly carbon dioxide and the weather, as part of the Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia. But these are much smaller in size (60 meters).

Also for the preservation of our green lung in 2011, the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB) will launch a new satellite for the control of illegal deforestation in the Amazon but also in African forests. The satellite will run 24 hours over 14 times the entire globe.
