Rio de Janeiro was officially nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the category of Cultural Landscape. The campaign was presented Monday by the State Government of Rio de Janeiro, with the prefecture of the city, the Ministry of Culture and the Institute of the historical and artistic heritage (Iphan).
The proposal also highlights the most significant cultural events in Rio, in addition to its contribution to culture through the Samba, Bossa Nova and the Carnival.
During the presentation, the representatives signed the official agreement of cooperation, one of the first steps to complete the formalization of the campaign. The dossiers of application will be sent to UNESCO after September, and then be evaluated in July 2010 during an international meeting in Brasilia, on the 50th anniversary of the capital of Brazil.
