The Berimbau
January 11th, 2009 by andrea

The berimbau is the musical instrument of a fundamental roda of Capoeira, and its manufacture is not difficult, both for the retrieval of materials to be used both for the construction technique. This is a string instrument formed from a flexible wooden pole (berimba), a harmonic steel wire (arame), to which is connected to a particular type of pumpkin (Cabaca), dried and cut on one side: this is the sounding instrument.
The berimbau is played smiting the arame with a wooden stick (baqueta), held with the forefinger and thumb of his right hand while his left hand holding the instrument and keeps (with the index finger and thumb) on dobrão; it is a currency that is pressed against the arame to obtain high-pitched sounds and sound effects, smooth stone can also perform the same function.
The right hand over the baqueta holds (with the middle and ring fingers) another tool that is used together with the Berimbau: the caxixi. This is a small wicker basket, whose bottom is made with a disc of pumpkin (Cabaca); within this small basket similar to a rattle are the seeds. Finally, the berimbau is played closer or farther to the mouth of the resonator (the cut side of Cabaca) in the abdomen, in order to obtain open and closed sounds.
The string section consists of three types of berimbau: the gunga, middle and purple.
The tool that opens the music is the gunga (berimbau severe), which harmonizes the other instruments and voices. After following the berimbau gunga average, the main instrument of the roda, the medium governs the game and determine what is valuable and what is not, and has the authority to terminate the game between the two contenders when it gets too nervous or stiff, or When it comes time to change the game in pairs, still, today announced the closing of a particular rhythm, or the end of the roda.
Then came the turn of purple-pitched, which is the solo instrument of the battery, and his sound variations enrich the melody of music
